This Friday, the free-agency opened in the NBA. Players can now talk and sign with a team. For example, at 00h01 (European Time), Goran Dragic announced on Twitter that he will resign with the Miami Heat.
“I’m staying right where I belong. Laker nation I love y’all. Purple and gold never gets old.”, tweeted Howard later this night. The tweet was deleted minutes after.
And almost 2 hours after this tweet, Shams Charania announced that Dwight Howard has agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.
2 days after, we’ve learned what happened this night thanks to Yahoo Sports.
Dwight Howard tweeted his intention to stay with the Lakers, because he thought he had an agreement with the Lakers. In fact, a formal offer was never made to Howard. But there was discussion about a “deal concept”. Howard agreed to this “deal concept” and thought is was a done deal.
But the front office of the Lakers informed Howard and his agent that they had to consult with team ownership. Howard was forced to delete his tweet.
“Howard waited for nearly an hour without hearing back, sources said. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers were being ultra-aggressive in courting the big man led by new head of basketball operations Daryl Morey, who was the general manager of the Houston Rockets when Howard signed there in 2013.“, writes Chris Haynes from Yahoo Sports.
Because he didn’t receive any formal offer from the Lakers, Howard decided to sign with the 76ers.
