Bad news from the Merelbeke Hawks as they have announced their immediate resignation from Top Division Men 1.

Faced with financial issues, combined with their terrible results so far this season with their 1-8 record, president Yannick De Clercq saw himself forced to pull the plug, ending his 20 year career as President of the club. It’s a sad turn of events for the club whose roots go all the way back to 1941 when a group of friends launched the club under the name Hellas Gent. In its long existence the club managed to win a National Championship (1954-’55), a Belgian Cup (1991-’92) and also won the Second Division twice (2006-’07 & 2016-’17).

What the future now holds for the club is still unknown. Will they disappear completely or will someone take over and try a relaunch? At the moment we have no idea but hopefully we’ll find out more in the coming weeks.
