An amazing season for Emma Meesseman

What else can we say except: Belgian Sportswoman Of The Year!

It has been an absolutely amazing season for Emma Meesseman who managed to pick up no less than 5 trophies in one year alone. After winning the Russian Cup, the Russian Championship and also the Women’s Euroleague with her team Ekaterinburg, Meesseman extended her season with a return to the Washington Mystics in the WNBA where she continued to shine and picked up two more trophies along the way: the WNBA Championship and the individual price of WNBA Finals MVP. A feat that not even Ann Wauters has ever managed to pull off.

Meesseman joined the Mystics with the season already in progress and played a total of 31 games, including 9 amazing playoff bouts. All in all she put down averages of 15.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 0.9 spg & 0.7 bpg in 25.5 mpg (mainly coming off the bench). Throughout the season she maintained excellent shooting percentages as she went 58.1% from 2pt range, a very impressive 48.0% from behind the arc and 88.1% at the charity stripe, clearly taking full advantage of any options she was given.

She recorded 2 Double-Doubles throughout the season with a 25 pts & 10 rebs outing in a win at Dallas (Sep. 6) and a 27 pts & 10 rebs performance in the Semi-Final opening win against Las Vegas (Sep. 17). It’s in those Semi-Finals that Meesseman stepped things up the most as she led Washington to another win with a season-high 30 pts in Game 2. With Las Vegas taken care off in 4 games (3-1), Meesseman and the Mystics took on Connecticut in a Finals series that would go down to the wire in a decisive Game 5. Meesseman continued her impressive play throughout the series, recording three 20+ pts games and was by all considered the X-factor which granted the Mystics the title, winning it 3-2. In 9 Playoff games she would end up with averages of 19.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.1 spg & 0.9 bpg, deservedly getting named the Finals MVP.

And that facial expression of utter surpise when the MVP-award was announced just makes us love her even more.
